Hello, my name is Gabriel Townsend and I am currently a sophomore here at Linn-Benton Community College! I currently am majoring in business administration and am planning to land an associates degree after the 2026 spring term. As far as career goals go, I am a third generation part owner of Townsend Farms Inc. which was established by my grandpa dating back to 1972. I intend on working for the company full time as soon as I finish up my studies, as well as my basketball career. Aside from my education, a major reason I am at LB is to further expand my basketball career and continue to develop as a player, before I head onto a University in the fall of this year.
When it comes to Media, I am hoping to peak a new desire in keeping up with the world and all the important stuff that transpires daily. I would also like to generally expand my knowledge about these real world actions, and I want to start building more of my own independent view! Culture varies everywhere you go, and since it is not possible for me to be everywhere at once, I believe it'd be more then useful to gain an understanding of the difference in dynamics around our world!
My passion would undoubtedly be basketball. Basketball has been apart of my life really since I was born, in fact I was learning to tap a mini basketball during the time I was taking my first steps! I shot on my first basket at three, which led me to pick up YMCA play at the age of five! From then, on, I can't recall the last time I didn't pick up a ball for more than a week. Basketball took me across our country for much of my youth and the latest stop was here in Albany, where I now play for coach Zimmerman!
3 Main Sources of Information:
In all transparency, TikTok hasn't ever really been the most reliable source. Every time something strikes my curiosity on TikTok, you'll likely find me in the safari search tab moments later. I believe this is because people spread controversial theories and "facts" in hopes of getting more likes and spotlight, which to me is inconvenient. I would have to consider Safari relatively reliable, in Safari you have access to News updates, images, videos, books etc. To me, that is as close as it gets to any reliable source on a phone. Lastly, I view Instagram the same as TikTok. Once again, people like the attention, the clicks, and to send people into a frenzy with sharing of news that can sometimes be true, and sometimes not.
From what I have learned, people in media are easily deceived. It can have an effect that causes people to hear so much of the same thing that they slowly back away from thinking for themselves! I am concerned and primarily for the younger generation and those to come. Knowing that folks older than me are even giving into non factual updates, is somewhat concerning, although I understand, for I have found myself in rabbit holes and have had to dig myself out. I am a sponge to everything I consume and hear. Do I agree or disagree with everything? No, however I do understand that with opinions, people always have a background. Nobody was born thinking radically about anything, and everybody was brought up in particular ways, finding their own ways to free think and grasp information. So, therefore if I hear something I side with, I try not to shift my whole view around that one thing, I'd rather take it into account and form my own opinion with understanding that I could potentially be factually wrong. I prefer to avoid the passing of information as much as possible and normally choose to ask a bunch of questions!
